Stress Head Pain -How To Get Rid Of Them

anxiety and panic attacks No Comments

Lots of people suffer from stress headaches–at least once in a while–but some people get them all the time. Having a headache can ruin your day because, often, they make it really hard to focus on what you want to do. There are lots of ways to treat and remedy stress headaches, but if they happen to you often you should see your doctor. For the most part, though, changing a few things in your daily life and using a home treatment is enough to get rid of tension headaches.

Ice packs can be a great way to lessen a stress headache. You can make one with a cold towel wrapped around a bag of ice or even around a bag of frozen veggies. Lie back in a comfortable spot and try to relax while using the ice pack on your forehead, the top of your head and the back of your neck (move it every few minutes from one location to the other). You can keep it longest in the area where you feel the most pain. Ice acts as an anti-inflammatory which helps lower the amount of pain you are feeling. This won’t address the underlying cause of your stress headaches but it will offer you some good relief. Jaw area tightness is sometimes a cause of stress headaches. Few people realize just how tightly they clench their jaws when they feel tense and that can result in a bunch of different problems including stress headaches. Sometimes it even leads to TMJ in which any movement from your jaw is painful. When this occurs, which is actually fairly common, a doctor, dentist or other practitioner must be consulted. However, even if you don’t have TMJ, tightness of the jaw could be causing you to get stress headaches. The best way to deal with this is to recognize jaw tension when you feel it and make a conscious effort to relax. Another good technique for this is to put a pencil, a pen, a small stick or something like that in between your teeth. You don’t want to bite down on this object, but it will remind you to release any tension there.

Do you wear things on or around your head; because doing so can add to your headaches. A headband would be an obvious culprit, but anything, including hats, sunglasses, helmets or even headphones could be causing tension in that area. Some people suffer from something called external compression headaches which are caused by pressure around your head. While a specific item might not feel hurtful when it is first put on, but as it gets left there and restricts blood flow, it can begin to cause pain.

There are also other systems, such as the Alexander Technique and Feldenkrais Method that work specifically on healthier posture. You can try to find a practitioner for yourself or look through videos posted on the net to find more information on these techniques.

To conclude, stress headaches aren’t a thing that any person actually enjoys dealing with. They are caused by anything and everything from complex illnesses to wearing headbands that don’t fit properly. You might try one (or more) of the remedies we have suggested here but if they fail to prove useful, it is time to call your doctor.

If you want a straightforward way to defeat anxiety each and every time, consider having a personal music player with you all the time, for instance an iPod or other music player. That way you can actually slip on your headphones, focus on some calming music, and stop tension dead in its tracks.

Should You Go Alone to a Therapist If Your Partner Refuses to Come Along?

anxiety and panic attacks No Comments

Frequently it happens that when conflict emerges in a relationship, only one party is willing to consider calling a therapist, even when it is the couple’s relationship that is the obvious cause for concern. Here are some of the most common reasons given for pushing away the idea of couple’s counseling:

* “You are the one with the real problem. Why should I have to go?”

* “I’m no good at talking about all that emotional crap — it will be a waste of time.”

* “I’m not interested in sharing personal stuff with a complete stranger. It doesn’t seem to stop you, so go right ahead.”

* “I’m too busy. We could never coordinate our schedules.”

Clearly each of these positions is a defense against a perceived danger. For some, the danger is the thought of being revealed as needing help, when our culture likes to pretend that grownups should not need help. For others, it seems dangerous to talk about problems, as if talking about something will magically make it worse. (Of course the opposite is what is true; talking is what can bring relief and healing.) Not knowing where the counseling will lead the couple also stirs up fear and defensiveness, particularly in folks with a high need for control. Some people find it embarrassing to have to talk with a stranger about personal matters, particularly when they are overly critical of themselves.

Defenses are there for a reason, and generally speaking it’s not a good idea to try to mow them down in a bold effort to improve things. If a person is adamant about refusing professional help, I recommend a move that stands a chance of finessing the defense: Go see the therapist without them.

One of the main concepts of family systems theory, which is behind most approaches to doing couple’s therapy, is the notion that if one person in a family changes, there is simply no way that the whole family will not also change. They cannot help but adjust to the changes demonstrated by the one in therapy. Here is a somewhat simplistic example: If Bill goes alone to therapy to deal with his unhappy marriage, it’s highly likely he will find relief and understanding at the therapist’s office. Then when he goes home feeling less critical of himself, he will be far less likely to fall into his usual patterns of being critical of his wife Megan. Then Megan will in turn have more patience with the children, and therefore they will have less trouble focusing on getting their homework done, because they aren’t worrying about why Mom is so mean to them. Pretty soon everyone is doing things differently, and more peacefully. And only one person went to therapy.

Another frequent outcome of having one person of the couple go to therapy is that the other person soon becomes curious about it. Often the second person will either want to come visit a session, or even want his or her own therapist, or want the treatment to become couple counseling for the two of them on a regular basis after all. If both the people have been miserable together, and one of them starts stepping out of the “yuckiness” and enjoying his or her life, how could the one left behind not want to also enjoy the good feelings that come from therapy?

Another reason not to push too hard to get someone to come to couple counseling is that sometimes it is too late. In that case, separate work may be preferable, especially if domestic violence has been part of the problem.

It should also be mentioned that some more emotionally mature couples who need to separate can make good use of a therapist who can help them un-couple. Meeting together for the purpose of deconstructing the relationship, dividing things up, processing anger and grief, and honoring the goodness in the past can be a reasonable goal.

Bottom line: Don’t let someone else talk you out of going for therapy just because the idea is not something they are ready for. You are a separate person. Go for it!

Reducing Anxiety By Taking Herbs

anxiety and panic attacks No Comments

For centuries stress sufferers have been using herbs as a treatment. Herbal remedies are just one of many choices you have for treating your stress. Today, people may be more likely to expect their doctor to write them a prescription for a drug for a problem like stress, but many people are seeking simpler solutions. Stress disorders can be devastating, it’s true, and someone may not have an option but to seek relief with conventional medicine. At other times, when the symptoms are not as intense, herbal remedies can work effectively.

If you want to help with being more alert, you could try taking Siberian ginseng. Experts in this field say that it can fight fatigue and help boost your energy level. They say it’s especially good for people experiencing stress since it helps restore the adrenal glands. Siberian ginseng promotes the movement of your immune cells, which is an important part of dealing with stress. It’s even helpful at reducing cholesterol and blood pressure in heart patients. Like the treatments for stress, there are many types of ginseng that can be helpful in healing, but the Siberian variety is important in stress relief.

The last herb to discuss is red clover, which has helped in many remedies, including those for stress.

When you combine an herbal treatment for stress with other types of stress reduction techniques the benefits can be doubled. There are many different things you can try from yoga and meditation to dietary changes or even therapy. While herbs can sometimes be an alternative to prescription medication, neither is usually a single solution to stress, as you have to learn how to deal with the causes of stress in your life. That’s why it’s important to incorporate stress management techniques as well as taking herbal remedies to relieve your symptoms.

Herbal remedies are such a great, natural way to help with your stress management. You may have some side effects from certain herbs, so take the time to do a little homework. You can be on your way to reducing stress after doing a little research.

Numerous studies have shown that laughter can reduce stress quite a bit. One way to get a good laugh would be to observe an amusing TV program or DVD. Why not customize the TV and begin giggling your stress levels away?

Therapy and its relevance today: NLP courses and more

anxiety and panic attacks No Comments

Unfortunately we live in a world that at times can be surrounded by grief and sadness. Whether this is due to a worldwide disaster or a more personal experience. Even though, we still have this perception that therapy is only for the severely mentally damaged.

As we all know, we are all different, not one of us is exactly the same or reacts exactly the same to situations. Our levels of coping also differ, with some of us seeming ‘stronger’ at dealing with certain issues than others. Our ability of lack of ability to cope with certain events is learnt over time. This can be due to a previous experience or from learnt behaviour – seeing it in people we look up to such as our parents. However what we are in danger of doing is leaving these issues to bury themselves so deep that they are not dealt with and execute themselves into our lives in a different way, usually negatively. This can be in the form of anger, fear, doubt and depression.

Therapy taps into those issues we have buried deep and address them with careful and considered techniques with the aim to understand them and deal with them accordingly so they no longer have a grip on your life. Fully trained professionals can only perform therapy else you can end up doing more damage.

There are various types of therapy widely used today. Ranging from more specific therapy such as Dance Movement Therapy to Cognitive behavioural therapy, which challenges the way you think about things and implements positive thinking techniques. Speaking to a doctor and doing some research online will allow you to decide which therapy approach would be right for you.

Debt, divorce, depression, deaths, abuse and stress are just a few issues that can affect us as we go through life. Therapy should no longer be seen as a taboo subject and welcomed into everyday living. It can help you to live a freer and more fulfilled life.
